Three Northwestern Leaders Receive Prestigious Chiropractic Awards

Three Northwestern Health Sciences University leaders received awards from the Minnesota Chiropractic Association (MCA) at its state convention May 15-17, 2009. Mark Zeigler, DC, president of Northwestern, received the President’s award. Joseph Sweere, DC, DABCO, DACBOH, FICC, a professor in the College of Chiropractic at Northwestern, received the Educator of the Year award. Kent Erickson, DC, a 1982 alumnus and chair of Northwestern’s Board of Trustees, was named Chiropractor of the Year.
“I’m delighted to be recognized by the MCA, and I feel privileged to have Northwestern’s efforts recognized,” says Dr. Zeigler. “We want to support the MCA in any way we can.”
Dr. Sweere says he was honored to receive the Educator of the Year Award. “I felt very humbled and surprised,” he says. “I believe there is so much unnecessary suffering in the world, mainly because of ignorance. To be able to prevent this suffering through our work is wonderfully rewarding.”
“I was honored to be recognized this year as Chiropractor of the Year for being part of the work Northwestern is doing with the MCA,” says Dr. Erickson. “The MCA and Northwestern are working closely together to better chiropractic, and we have great potential as a profession to expand services to many more people. This is the most exciting time I have seen in my 27 years of practice.”
The MCA is a professional organization dedicated to helping doctors of chiropractic help their communities.
The President of the Year award is given to an individual who has gone above and beyond in his or her role as a president, according to Debra Hurston, executive director of the MCA. The Chiropractor of the Year award is given to an individual who has a long history of supporting the chiropractic profession, and the Educator of the Year award is given to an educator who has excelled in community and public education. Hurston believes that Drs. Zeigler, Erickson, and Sweere demonstrate characteristics deserving of the awards they received.
