Northwestern Eliminated From Hockey League Playoffs
Naturals Fall 7-3 to SB Remodeling
Posted on Aug. 10, 2009
SB Remodeling scored three unanswered goals in the third period to hand Northwestern Health Sciences University’s club hockey team a 7-3 loss in the first-round of the Showcase Summer Hockey League playoffs. The Naturals’ loss on Aug. 9 at Parade Ice Arena ended their Showcase Summer season. They posted a 6-6-1 record in the Showcase League and an overall record of 10-12-3 in their 2009 campaign.
Greg Petersen, Undergraduate Studies, again led the Naturals with a goal and an assist. Also scoring goals for Northwestern were forwards Chris Trimner, T3 chiropractic, and Matt Miller, T5 chiropractic.
Miller gave Northwestern an early 1-0 lead on a goal that came courtesy of a pair of pinpoint passes from goalie Nick Ongaro, T6 chiropractic, and defenseman Jeff Bjorklund, T3 chiropractic. SB Remodeling quickly scored three unanswered goals to take a 3-1 lead before Trimner scored from in front of the net on a pass from Petersen to close the gap to 3-2.
SB Remodeling quickly answered with a goal to go up 4-2, but Petersen scored on a breakaway on an amazing pass from center Mike Modich, T9 chiropractic. Modich dove for the puck at center ice when he saw Petersen all alone ahead of him, and managed to pass it to him while prone on the ice.
“They were just a better team tonight,” said John Healy, hockey club advisor and the University’s director of communications. “They found the weaknesses in our defense, and you could tell they had played together under a system for quite awhile. Plus, they had some very skilled players.”
Many of the SB Remodeling players are on the St. Olaf College Division 3 collegiate hockey team that won the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title last winter. SB Remodeling won the Showcase Summer regular season title with a 9-2-1 record. Northwestern finished fourth with a 6-5-1 record. The two teams split their regular-season games, with the Naturals winning the first game 9-4 on four goals by Jake Bohnen, T3 chiropractic, and then losing 10-9 in a July game that featured a team-record five goals by Petersen.
News and Notes
The Naturals will begin fall practices on Sept. 8 at Bloomington Ice Gardens. New players are always welcome. Contact John Healy, club advisor, for details at jhealy@nwhealth.edu. The club will take the rest of August off, then start twice a week practices in September to prepare for their inaugural season in the American Collegiate Hockey Association, a full-contact collegiate club hockey league. The Naturals will be playing their home schedule at the Bloomington Ice Gardens, where they practice, and Richfield Ice Arena. The schedule is still being developed, but the Naturals will begin play in October.
The club will also field a team in Showcase Hockey’s Silver Winter League. The league is one of the premier non-contact men’s leagues in the Twin Cities. The Naturals played in the Showcase Summer Silver League and qualified for the playoffs. They lost 7-3 to SB Remodeling in the first round. Many of the players on the club will play in both Showcase and ACHA games. Players who don’t want to play contact hockey will play in just the Showcase league.
