For the second straight game, Northwestern Health Sciences University’s club hockey team, the Naturals, had a player score four goals to lead the team to a win. This time, it was Jake Bohnen, T3 chiropractic, who totaled four goals and an assist from his wing position to power the Naturals to a 9-4 dismantling of SB Remodeling in a Showcase Summer Hockey League game on June 17.
The Naturals’ win over SB Remodeling at Parade Ice Arena was their third straight victory and was notable because it was the second time in three games that they defeated an unbeaten team. On June 7, Northwestern beat the Naked Snowmen 10-8 to start their current win streak.
“We’ve looked like a different team for the past few weeks,” said John Healy, club advisor and the University’s director of communications. “Weekly practices and a new-found confidence – along with the addition of an outstanding new defenseman – have provided the ‘edge’ we needed to begin to play at a much higher level of competitiveness.”
Northwestern’s top forward line totaled 10 points or more for the third straight game. Bohnen had five point (four goals and an assist); Mike Modich, T9 chiropractic, had four assists from his center position; and Andrew Erlandson, T3 chiropractic, added a goal and an assist. On June 14 in a 14-4 win over the Flames, Erlandson posted a six-point night – four goals and two assists.
“Our first line on offense is really working well together,” noted Healy. “Mike (Modich) has been setting up his two wings (Bohnen and Erlandson) for goals with some outstanding passing. And every line is really crashing the net and scoring a lot of goals on rebounds.”
The Naturals took a quick 1-0 lead over JB Remodeling on a goal by Greg Petersen, Undergraduate Studies, with Modich providing the assist. After SB Remodeling tied the score 1-1, the Naturals scored three straight goals.
Leading 4-2 after the first period, the Naturals got two quick goals from Bohnen on assists from Modich and Petersen and then a goal from Miller.
“I think the other team, which had a 5-0 record, was shocked when we took that 7-2 lead,” said Healy. “They had been averaging 10 goals per game and were sitting on top of the league standings. They weren’t ready to be behind by five goals with just one period left.”
Healy pointed to a smoothering defensive effort by the Naturals as a primary reason for their win. After giving up an average of seven goals a game in their first four games, Northwestern has given up an average of just four goals a game in their last two contests.
Leading Northwestern’s defense Wednesday night was goalie Nick Ongaro, T6 chiropractic . Also providing stifling defense were Petersen; Jordan Dyke, T2 chiropractic; Jeff Bjorklund, T3 chiropractic; Giles Stifter, T8 chiropractic; and Tom Policano, T3 chiropractic.
Matt Miller, T5 chiropractic, scored two goals and added an assist from his second-line wing position. Also on the second offensive line were Cassidy Quinton, T5 chiropractic, who had a goal and an assist; and Steve Dus, who had a pair of assists. Dus has been coaching the Naturals at weekly practices for the last month. He played Division 3 hockey at University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire with Petersen, the Naturals’ new defenseman. Dus also coaches the Northern Lights, a junior hockey team based in Bloomington.
Petersen added a goal and an assist, with Bjorklund and Policano both chipping in assists Wednesday night. Also on the team are Chris Trimner, T3 chiropractic; Matt Freudenthal, T6 chiropratic; Adam Garcia, T5 chiropractic; and Nick Okins, T3 chiropractic.
With the win, Northwestern improved their Showcase League record to 3-3. Overall this season, the Naturals are 7-9-2.
