Part IV Club Seeking Student Volunteers for Mock Practical Exams
Mock Exams Aim to Help Prepare Students for National Boards
Posted on Oct. 26, 2009
The Part IV Club at Northwestern Health Sciences University is conducting a mock Part IV practical exam and a mock radiology practical exam to help prepare T9 and T10 chiropractic students for the National Chiropractic Board Exams.
The mock radiology practical will take place Oct. 27, 2009, starting at 6 p.m., in Room 203; and the mock Part IV practical will take place Nov. 3, 2009, starting at 5:30 p.m. in the University Health Services clinic.
Student volunteers are needed to pose as patients for the mock practical. The Part IV Club is looking for T1, T3, and T4 students to help make the mock exam a success. The time commitment consists of one training session, held over the lunch hour on Oct. 28 or 29; and one evening, Nov. 3 from 5 p.m. – 9 p.m. Please contact Rebecca Rodne if you’re interested in volunteering.
“We were all patients for the previous mock practical,” says Rebecca Rodne, T6 chiropractic student, who leads the Part IV Club along with classmates Jeremy Thompson and Andy Garcia. “We want students to know what a great experience it was. There are so many invaluable aspects of clinical education that can be learned by being a mock patient.”
Rodne, Thompson and Garcia took over club leadership in September. Traditionally, the Part IV Club has been run by a T10 student. The trio hopes that co-leading the club will ease the burden placed on any one of them. “We thought if we got involved now,” said Rodne, “that we’d be more familiar with the process by the time we’re taking the exam when we are T10s.”
All three leaders say their experience as a mock patient motivated them to make some changes. For the first time, mock graders will provide feedback to students who participate in the practical, offering students insight into what they might need to improve on before they take the Board Exams. Also new this year, the club is allowing T6 and T7 students to participate in the mock practical exam as a study aid for the CCA Exam. T7 students can also participate as a grader for the mock exam.
“We encourage the T9s and T6s to take advantage of this opportunity,” says Rodne. For the mock radiology practical, students in groups of 10 will be scheduled for 30-minute sessions. For the mock Part IV practical, students can sign up for a 30-minute time slot, and will progress through seven stations, at five-minute intervals. Appointment times are scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis. Please send your name, trimester, and top two time options to Rebecca Rodne. You will receive a confirmation of your testing time via e-mail.
