The Value of Demographic Factors in Opening a Successful Practice: Part VIII, Can You Truly ‘Eat the Scenery’?

Several years ago we traveled to our ancestral home high up in the Alps of Switzerland. Sitting on the tiny veranda, perched on the slope overlooking the valley, the view was breathtaking. If ever you could “eat the scenery,” that was it. I am sure many of you have had similar experiences and are tempted to set up your office in an idyllic spot.

Recently, I was in northern California on the shores of a large man-made lake. The nearest towns in either direction were 10 miles away. Yet here was a chiropractor, apparently practicing out of his home. Perhaps he was retired and just saw a few patients; I hope so.

I have practiced for years near a beautiful suburban lake. Chiropractors are attracted to this area because of the recreational opportunities, fine schools, and beautiful scenery. At the last count, we have a chiropractic ratio of 850 persons to 1. The ideal ratio is 3,000-to-1. This ratio is three to four times more than the chiropractic population can support. Demographic considerations were apparently not high in the decision-making of our latest area chiropractors.

Can you truly eat the scenery? Only time will tell. Do you wish to take the chance?
