Student Senate Strives to Provide First-Rate Student Experience

For students new to Northwestern Health Sciences University, the start of the term can seem like a blur of new classes, new faces, and new spaces. But even for returning students, a new term sometimes brings changes. Northwestern’s Student Senate works hard to provide a positive experience for all students, providing a link between the student body and University administration.
According to Joessa Austin, chiropractic student and Student Senate president, the focus so far this term has been on current student concerns. “We have discussed and alleviated specific concerns that students presented to us,” reports Austin, “such as asbestos removal procedures at the University; reasons for the new printing fees; and specific budget requests.”
Other Student Senate initiatives include:
- Hosting a successful Club and Organization Day in September, giving students an opportunity to learn more about the vast array of club opportunities and events available at Northwestern;
- Monthly recognition of Random Acts of Kindness nominees;
- Introducing student-fare bus passes, resulting in increased bus pass use among Northwestern students;
- Organizing sports tournaments during October to provide athletes that plan to compete in ChiroGames with an opportunity to play together and hone their skills; and
- Organizing the annual “Northwestern’s Got Talent” student and faculty talent show, scheduled for Friday, Oct. 30, with a Halloween party to follow.
The Senate Cabinet meets regularly with faculty and administration, notes Austin. “We help lend a voice to student opinions regarding clinic operations, website development, class structure, curriculum management, and integration strategies, among other things. Our goal is to help provide the best possible student experience at Northwestern.”
