Northwestern Students Get First-Hand Look at Whole Foods Supplements with Standard Process

Posted on June 16, 2009

A group of 28 chiropractic and MCAOM students from Northwestern Health Sciences University have been self-selected to tour the Standard Process Farm and Plant, in Palmyra, Wisc. The tour was established through Clinical Education’s Clinical Rotation Program, in an effort to teach students about whole food supplements. The tour, taking place June 18 –19, 2009, will offer students 10 clinic hours.

Students will learn about the whole food nutrition philosophy, product production, research initiatives in whole food nutrition, and the implementation of whole food supplements in a chiropractic practice. Standard Process creates supplements by concentrating nutrients from whole foods, while keeping the food’s enzymes and nutritional content intact. “Standard Process supplements are the next best thing to an organic, whole food diet,” says Lindsey Baillie, chiropractic student. “They put all of the things we should have on our dinner plates in their supplements, unlike many alternative supplements that are made from synthetic sources.”

After receiving nutrition training, attending a whole food seminar, discussions, and tours through the farm and manufacturing facility, students will complete an assignment for credit. “Northwestern and Standard Process are partnering in support of successful educational programs, and in honor of that relationship we are pleased to invite Northwestern students to experience how our products develop from seed to supplement,” says Mary Beth Larsen, DC, chiropractic relations representative at Standard Process. “We support Northwestern’s efforts to develop strong nutrition education programs and hope that the students' visit to our farms and plant will be informative.”

In addition to the students from Northwestern, four employees will accompany the students on the tour, including Jodi Skaufel, DC, DC, Chiropractic Geriatrics Resident; Cara Boggren, DC, Chiropractic Geriatrics Resident, University Health Services; Mary Berg, MA, clinical experiential education coordinator, assistant professor; and Alyssa Kluver, retail manager, Bloomington Natural Care Center.

"This rotation will be an excellent opportunity for students to see first-hand the farm and manufacturing facility for Standard Process,” says Berg. “The evening seminar will allow them to interact with an established chiropractor who uses whole food nutritional supplements in practice. In addition, nutrition concepts from Continuing Education classes at Northwestern will be delivered via DVD on the trip there. The entire experience will allow reflection and discussion on nutrition supplementation."
