Northwestern’s Military Club Honors Those Who Serve

Posted on Nov. 12, 2009

The Military Club at Northwestern Health Sciences University captured the spirit of Veteran’s Day with an event recognizing those in the Northwestern community who are serving in the military, or who have served in the past.

Veterans were asked to wear their military uniform for the day, and students were encouraged to wear anything patriotic. Several people in uniform gathered at the event, which included a moment of silence and a flag presentation.

Chad Paulson, chiropractic student, presented a flag that he few while he was deployed in Iraq. “I’m giving this flag in appreciation for the University’s support of military students, and the Warrior to Citizen program offered by University Health Services,” Paulson said.

Charles Sawyer, DC, senior vice president; and Jim McDonald, MBA, vice president of administrative services and chief financial officer, accepted the flag on behalf of the University. Dr. Sawyer acknowledged the challenges faced by today’s student soldiers. “When I was Lt. Paulson’s age,” he stated, “the National Guard might be called out to help local authorities with a civil disturbance, or to help sandbag an area in danger of flooding.” Today’s part-time soldiers are likely to face extended deployments to countries like Iraq and Afganistan, enduring harsh, dangerous conditions.

“We admire their commitment, their patriotism, and their ability to come home to their community and go back to work, and back to school,” said Dr. Sawyer.

The purpose of the Military Club is to support students in the military or those who have family in the military; and to advocate for including natural care modalities in the military health care system. The club is not exclusive to people in the military. To be added to the Military Club e-mail list, contact Paulson at cpaulson@nwhealth.edu.
