Education/Exercise & Chiropractic for Chronic Back Pain: a Pilot Study

Funding:

Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Minneapolis MN
$46,981 (subaward)

Description:

This pilot study will assess the feasibility of a planned full-scale RCT designed to evaluate whether education/exercise plus chiropractic care will result in greater improvements in LBP symptoms than will education/exercise alone, in veterans with chronic LBP.

This study has the following specific aims:

To assess whether enough veterans with chronic LBP can be identified, meet eligibility criteria and be randomized to demonstrate that recruitment for a planned full-scale RCT is feasible.

To assess whether veterans with chronic LBP will adhere to protocol interventions, including recommended education sessions, home exercise regimens, non-chiropractic follow-up exams/interviews, and chiropractic treatments.

To assess whether veterans with chronic LBP will complete in-clinic, mailed and telephone data collection per study protocol.

To obtain estimates of effect sizes and the corresponding standard errors of the primary efficacy outcome measures in order to estimate the required sample size of a planned full-scale RCT.
