Volunteers of America: a pilot study

Funding:

Volunteers of America                       $150,000

Description:

Volunteers of America (VOA) is a nonprofit, faith-based social welfare organization. It is one of the nation's largest human service organizations reaching more than two million people in communities across the United States. The services offered by VOA are varied and included services and programs that help frail elderly men and women.

This project is focused on VOA's elderly services. Faculty from the WHCCS are working with VOA administrators to implement CAM services into two of the VOA's assisted and long-term care facilities in the Twin Cities area, the Edina Care Center, and the Elder Homestead.

The primary goal of this project is to: determine the feasibility of developing a sustainable and replicable model for integrated Chiropractic, Acupuncture, and Massage services within the VOA system for the purpose of improving VOA residents' overall quality of life. This will be accomplished through the implementation of a fellowship program, which will provide CAM providers the training and experience necessary to provide evidence-informed care for older individuals. A system for data collection will also be developed.

Project Status:

Five fellows (representing Acupuncture/Oriental Medicine,Chiropractic and Massage Therapy) completed the first phase of training in October 2008 to January 2009. Models for care delivery have been developed, with CAM services commencing in February 2009.
