Herb Club

Club Objectives

  • To further develop the Northwestern herbal gardens by increasing plant numbers, encouraging student involvement with cultivation and harvesting, developing an aesthic desgn and forming an association with herb growers.
  • To complete the identifying signage of plants in the garden.
  • To invite two outside speakers for further education on current herbal topics.
  • To develop the Herb website as an educational resource site. The website will include book recommendations, links to our herb suppliers, a link to an excel sheet that contains a complete listing of the herbs planted in the medicinal gardens, and photos of featured herbs with descriptions of their properties.
  • To provide/share education of featured herbs by comparing their properties and functions during garden-side meetings.
  • To develop an alliance with other national student garden projects.
  • To provide at least one field trip per year to learn about cultivating, harvesting and preparing herbs for consumption.
  • To serve as an academic and social liaison between the student body and Northwestern alumni.
  • To learn about the use of herbs in healthcare modalities such as chiropractic, eastern and western medicine, naturopathy and Native American healing.
  • To produce a garden guide with a map and information on about all of the herbs.

Long-term goal: to develop plans for a school conservatory that would augment the outdoor herb .
