 Northwest Swing Dance Club

What is it all about??

The purpose of this club is to introduce the students, staff, and faculty to the art and culture of swing dancing. The club is designed to teach participants about the methods of swing while also giving participants a fun new way to be active! Swing dance provides a fun alternative to traditional work outs and provides a fun way to be social!

Why should I join??

  • Free Lessons!!!

Going to a wedding? Or are you getting married? Or do you just want to learn how to move on a dance floor? Northwest Swing offers free lessons!

  • Stay Active!!!

Why spend hours on a boring treadmill?? Stay active AND have fun!!! Dance is a great way to burn those calories, while still having fun!

  • Great music!!!

We introduce our members both to neo-swing music as well as the classics!

  • Get noticed on the dance floor!!!

Come learn how to add style and flair to your dance! We emphasize the importance of dancing and playing with the music. Learn to really play on the music rather than just dancing to the rhythm! (and let's be serious, guys: Girls LOVE guys who can dance!!)

  Objectives of this club:

  1. Introducing students to the methods, movements, and background of both East Coast Swing and the Lindy Hop.
  2. Helping students to gain an appreciation for swing music, jazz, its evolution, and the era from which it arose.
  3. Get students out of the sedentary lifestyle and up and dancing as a form of working out.
  4. Provide free events for students to practice their skills.

What's in store for Summer '07??

LINDY HOP!!!

This trimester we will be teaching the Lindy Hop! A very very fun version of swing that is very versatile! A bit more involved than East Coast swing, which we learned last trimester, but that makes it all the more fun!

We have moved our lessons to Wednesdays at 6:00pm in the Gym. This will allow the opportunity for members to bring friends, family, or significant others who may not go to this school. Lessons will be 6:00-7:00pm followed by open swing 7:00-9:00pm . Come for lessons, stay to dance! (Feel free to come to part or all of each meeting! Even if you're studying in the library and need to get away and clear your head for just one quick dance! You're always welcome!!)

OPEN SWING

As usual, we will hold an evening of open swing dance. A way to practice what you learned in lessons or bring friends to come dance! We provide a free way to get out and dance, so you don't have to spend money at the clubs! Open swing is held Wednesdays 7:00pm-9:00pm in the Gym.

SWING WORKSHOP

Northwest Swing is proud to host Brandon Tearse!! Mr. Tearse is a swing instructor from California . We will be hosting an all-day swing workshop on July 7, 2007 !!! As usual, the event is free to all participants and open to everyone! Bring your friends, neighbors, family, the guy from the gas station, everyone! The workshop will focus on Lindy Hop with blues styling and how to add style and flair to your dancing!! The workshop will consist of multiple group sessions, lunch, and the opportunity to take private or semi-private lessons with the instructor. Following the workshop, Tapestry is hosting a night of swing dancing with Christine Rosholt! So members of the club are welcome to head out together to show off what they learned and experience the real swing scene of Minnesota !! More information will be coming shortly!

SAVE THE DATE!!!! All-day Saturday, July 7, 2007 !!
