University Counseling Service
The University offers counseling services for students experiencing
academic, personal, or relationship problems. Conseling is
usually offered on a short-term basis, and is provided to
students without charge. At times, a referral may be needed
for services outside of the University. However, the cost
for these referral services is not covered by Northwestern
Health Sciences University. When crises or emergency services
are needed, students can call the Crisis Connection at 612-379-6363.
Counseling services are jointly developed with the student
and may include: short term counseling, joint counseling with
a partner, and/or group support with other students facing
similar life issues. Counseling services are provided with
the strictest confidentiality. For additional information
on client rights, confidentiality, clinical record policy
and emergency attention, refer to the Counseling Services
Handout in Room 204.
Skill-enhancing workshops are offered to students who are
interested in improving their performance in areas such as
study skills, test anxiety and life stresses. Students with
ideas for additional workshops or groups are invited to bring
these suggestions to the Student Affairs office.
Students who would like help addressing academic and/or personal
concerns can make an appointment for counseling. To schedule
an appointment with the University Counselor, call the Student
Affairs office, ext. 405, or send e-mail to Lori Hanegraaf
at lhanegraaf@nwhealth.edu.
Peer Tutoring Program
The Peer Tutoring Service is provided by the Student Affairs
office to facilitate the learning experience of all students.
The service is provided free of charge, and a current list
of tutors is available in the Student Affairs office. Tutors
can be contacted directly to arrange meeting times. The Student
Affairs office recruits tutors from the student body, and
selects tutors who have demonstrated academic success and
a desire to help others. Any student interested in becoming
a tutor should contact Lori Hanegraaf at lhanegraaf@nwhealth.edu
at ext. 405.

Accommodations for Student With Disabilities
The University will not, because of disability, deny qualified
persons access to, participation in or the benefits of any
program or activity operated by the University. Academically
and technically qualified persons shall receive appropriate
accommodations to ensure access to educational opportunities,
programs and activities of the University.
Dr. Emily Tweed, Dean of Student Affairs, is responsible
for coordination of programs and services for qualified applicants
for admission and enrolled students with disabilities. Such
coordination relates solely to students' disabilities. In
order for the University to provide appropriate accommodations
for students with disabilities, the following process will
be used:
- The Admissions Office will notify admitted students of
the appropriate procedures to receive necessary support
services.
- It is the responsibility of the individual student to
inform the University Counselor, Mark Schader, of any special
aids or services that the student may need as the result
of a disability. To schedule an appointment with the University
Counselor, call the Student Affairs office, ext. 405, or
send e-mail to Lori Hanegraaf at lhanegraaf@nwhealth.edu.
- Students must submit directly to the University Counselor,
a written request for accommodations or auxiliary aids.
All requests must include documentation of a specific disability.
Students may be required to submit medical or other diagnostic
documentation of disability and/or limitations. This information
will remain confidential except as permitted by the student
expressly for providing support services to that student.
- As needed, University Counselor, will discuss the student's
request for accommodation with the student and faculty member
or department involved to determine appropriate accommodation.
If there is a question about the appropriateness of a student's
requested accommodation, the Dean of Student Affairs will
inform the student of the University's decision. The University
will make every reasonable effort to provide appropriate
accommodations for requests. The University will not waive
requirements that are integral to the educational program.
- Requests must be made in a timely manner. Untimely requests
may result in delay, substitution, or denial of accommodation.
- Complaints concerning the provision of accommodations
to disabled students will be handled through the Student
Complaint process.
