Concurrently with the last three trimesters, internship is served in Northwestern’s outpatient clinics and CBI offices. Interns administer chiropractic care to public clinic patients under the direction of the clinic staff, and carry out examinations and treatment. Specific protocols for Internship are outlined in the NWCC Intern's Clinic Handbook and the CBI Faculty Handbook.

Course Objectives

Interns will be able to demonstrate competency of the learning objectives component in each syllabus module listed below by the end of the 8th trimester and perform them with minimal supervision. T8 interns are responsible for completing the assignment component in one of the syllabus modules in the Syllabus Workbook and turning it in to the Department of Clinical Education following the schedule under IV A.

The Clinic Orientation module is always completed first. The remaining four module groups may be organized by students and their supervisors in any order, and the assignments turned in according to the schedule below.

  1. Complete the following requirements:
    1. Hours:
    • Primary clinic - minimum of 17 hrs each week (17-21 hours).
    • Clinic Rotations - complete assigned Rotations for the term
    • Cummulative miniumum total for the term: 300 hours
    1. Appropriate record keeping and maintenance of patient files.
    2. Complete checkout process at end of term. Must be done before advancing to T9.
    3. Turn in: Clinic Rotation Evaluations & Clinic Experience Evaluation(checkout)
    4. Turn in MAR, Monthly Activity Logs, Time Sheets, X-ray Report forms, and Case Management forms.
    5. Syllabus Workbook Assignments are due according to the following schedule:

  1. Begin work on the cumulative minimum requirements listed below (see NWCC Intern's Clinic Handbook for specific details). All requirements must be completed before beginning a T10 preceptorship.
    1. 250 chiropractic adjustments/manipulations. A minimum of 200 are required to be spinal.
    2. 75 adjustments directly supervised and assessed by the faculty clinician.
    3. 20 clinical examinations with case history. To qualify, the examination must at least include an evaluation of all vital signs, case history, and an appropriate general (orthopedic, neurologic, and systems review) or focused examination. A case management report must be written for each examination.
    4. Order, perform,and integrate the data for case management and follow-up on a minimum of 10 different outpatients.
    5. 15 different, complex case types must be evaluated and managed, including 10 live-patient (8 non-student), 5 may be paper-based.
    6. 20 x-ray techs. An x-ray report must be written to receive credit for the tech.
    7. 22 area radiographic (diagnostic imaging) examination written reports.
    8. 25 urinalyses, 20 complete blood counts and 10 clinical chemistries.

None of these services may be administered to NWCC students or an NWCC student's own family member(s); however, an intern may treat another NWCC student's family member(s).

Attendance

Minimum of 17 hours for each week of the term in your assigned clinic. Complete all assigned Rotations for the term. Cummulative minimum clinic hours for the term is 300.

This schedule of lecture and lab topics and quizzes and exams may be changed during the course of the trimester as circumstances require. Whenever possible, such changes will be announced in class before the date and time in question. You are responsible for anything that transpires during lectures and labs, even when you are unable to attend.
