Basic techniques of assessment and management of patients experiencing airway, breathing and circulatory emergencies. Customized for the chiropractic physician who may encounter situations with adults or pediatric patients in clinical or field environments. Students receive A.H.A. Health Care Provider C.P.R. certification and First Responder Certification from the State of Minnesota. Upon successful completion, students are eligible to challenge the National Registry First Responder exam.

Course Objectives
NOTES PACKET - PURCHASE IN BOOKSTORE (REQUIRED)
A. Quizzes: 11 regular, as listed; multiple choice,(quiz#is equivalent to lesson #)10 questions each; based on reading assignment for that day;(not on notes)students may drop 2. Worth 20% of final grade. B. Tests (worth 25% of final grade). **Sum of Midterm and Final Written Exams must be equal to a minimum of 70% to receive state certification and be eligible to take National Registry exam: Written exams may be made up if missed or, in the case of the CPR written test, if unsuccessfully completed. Make up exams will only be given with an excused absence. Students have one week from the time the exam was originally scheduled to retake the exam.
Final Written:(worth 50% of Test grade) a. 75 multiple choice questions; cumulative with emphasis on second half of term (Lessons 7-12) C. Labs and lab assignment: worth 30% of final grade. To receive full credit for each lab, students will be expected to: 1. Labs: 25 pts. each (5 pts. attendance; 20 pts. participation, including equipment). To receive full credit for each lab, students will be expected to: a. arrive on time for their assigned lab (trades in lab period only permitted if approved ahead of time by instructor) and remain the entire session (labs begin at the top of the hour and are 1hr 50 min. in length) b. have prepared for the lab by completing any reading or viewing assignment listed for that week in the syllabus, and attending the corresponding lecture period (students that are determined to be unprepared may be requested to leave the lab and schedule a make-up session with the instructor); c. wear legible pin-on plate style nametags on the front of the shirt above the level of the third rib during lab sessions; d. have the items under the "required materials for lab" section available to bring to each lab (the first lab is the only7 exception); an itemized list is included with the course schedule. 2. To receive credit for this assignment, students will be expected to: a. have all non-disposable equipment used in Emergency Procedures lab (safety goggles, pocket mask, stethoscope, BP cuff and penlight) clearly engraved or permanently marked with the user's name or initials by week 6 of lab. E. Grade Posting: Grades will be posted on eNorthwestern. Each student is responsible for checking his/her progress and making the instructor aware of any problems or missing grades.
Certificates and Eligibilities(upon successful completion of course) A. American Heart Association Health Care Provider CPR(Replacement cards will be issued for $25/card) B. Minnesota Department of Health First Responder C. Eligibility to challenge the National Registry's First Responder exam D. Eligibility to enroll in the Emergency Medical Technician-Basic course offered at NHSU during Summer term. Additional Information A. Students are reminded to dress comfortably, as the majority of labs will involve physical activity on the floor of the gym. Skirts are discouraged. Students will be allowed to change clothing for clinic appointments.
