This course will begin to assist the student through
the transition from the classroom to the clinical environment
by introducing the patient care and record keeping procedures
of the Internship I lab and the University Health Service.
This in an introductory class covering aspects of documentation
and the clinic procedures students will follow during
their initial patient care experience in the subsequent
terms. |

- Become acquainted with the different styles of record
keeping.
- Understand the principles of patient care protocols,
guidelines, and standards of care.
- Know the legal aspects of HIPPA compliance.
- Be able to identify the forms used in the Internship
I lab and the University Health Service for record keeping.
- Know the purpose and placement of all relevant and necessary
forms used in problem-oriented file management.
- Understand the clinical thought process in selecting
additional tests and procedures for patient care management.
- Participate in active Intern/student patient encounters
in the Internship I lab.
- Know and utilize the GroupWise e-mail system as a communication
option for T5 and as a routine function for T6/T7 clinic.
- Know the appropriate use of language and acceptable
abbreviations.
- Be able to make corrections in a patient's file in an
acceptable manner.

- Mandatory classroom attendance--see grading below.
- Read and be prepared to discuss class notes and Journal
Articles as assigned.
- Attendance for guest speakers.
- There will be various assignments to demonstrate your
understanding of the material.
- Final--25 question, open note examination.

- Weekly classroom attendance is mandatory. Without weekly
attendance, the student will not have the understanding
that is necessary to develop the flow of patient care
and file management--see grading below.
- If you have an official excused absence, I will help
you make up the missed work. If you just choose to miss
the class, you will need to find out what went on from
your classmates.
- Typed History, General History, Case Summary and Treatment
Plan as assigned.

Introduction to Clinical Internship is a PASS/NO PASS class.
To PASS this course the student must complete all assignments
in the time allotted and attain a minimum score of 70%
on the final examination.

history and examination.
- Know how to prepare a Case Summary and Treatment
Plan.
- Understand the purpose and function of a Report
of Findings.
- Thoroughly understand how to write SOAP notes.
- Understand when and how to conduct a Reevaluation.
- Know the proper use of ICD-9 codes.
- Know the implication of the HIPPA regulations.

Please Note
This schedule of lecture and lab topics and quizzes and exams
may be changed during the course of the trimester as circumstances
require. Whenever possible, such changes will be announced
in class before the date and time in question. You are responsible
for anything that transpires during lectures and labs, even
when you are unable to attend. In the event that you miss
a class session, make sure you check with a classmate about
any announcements or schedule changes which may have been
made. Makeup exams are allowed only according to the policies
described in the current student handbook, which is available
in the Student Affairs office.
