This course introduces new students to concepts and issues pertaining to building the foundations for the business of chiropractic practice, and for becoming a professional. Discussions will include what it means to be a professional, ways that students can begin to grow in terms of displaying the qualities and behavior expected of a professional, values, goals, and personel (time) management.

The Institution-wide learning goals define the common ground that unites the programs within the university. They are purposefully broad so that the various colleges and schools can continue to develop their unique identities through varying ways in which the goals are met.

  1. Effective Communication
    Graduates will demonstrate effective verbal, non-verbal, and written communication skills in a wide variety of contexts, including collaborative activities.
  2. Self Directed and Lifelong Learning
    Graduates will be aware of the limits of one’s personal knowledge and experience and have an intellectual interest in scholarly and creative endeavors. Graduates will actively set appropriate learning goals, pursue them, and apply the knowledge gained.

    Graduates will demonstrate awareness and sensitivity to the cultural and health practices of individuals and communities. Graduates will be able to identify appropriate health related resources.

    Graduates will understand and value the benefits of service to the community.
  6. Influence of Mind, Body and Spirit on Health
    Graduates will recognize the inter-relationship of the mind, body and spirit and the influence of extrinsic factors on an individual’s health.
  7. Critical Thought and Knowledge Acquisition
    Graduates will acquire, appraise and apply scientific information. Graduates will contextually organize and synthesize relevant information to address an issue or problem.
  8. Competence in one's Discipline
    Graduates will demonstrate competence of appropriate depth and scope for one's discipline.

Course Objectives

  1. Describe how the chiropractic college experience is different from most prior college experiences.
  2. Discuss the various reasons why people pursue professional careers, including their expectations of a career in chiropractic.
  3. Discuss the qualities that people look for in a doctor.
  4. Describe challenges that must be overcome in developing these qualities in oneself, and ways that this can be accomplished, beginning in trimester one.
  5. Describe the ways in which people may be different from each other, and how tolerance and even enjoyment of these differences is an essential part of developing a successful practice.
  6. Describe fundamental ways in which all human beings are similar to each other, and how this knowledge can help to develop interpersonal skills based on a desire to help and serve others.
  7. Describe how an understanding of boundaries issues is necessary for success in school life and practice.
  8. Discover core values and how they help you develop personal/professional goals as well as manage your time.
  9. Program Information Day
    • Expose the Northwestern student community to the diversity of programs offered at NWHSU and facilitate cross program interaction.
    • Introduce the students to the healing philosophies of the health care programs offered at Northwestern and provide students with an opportunity to reflect, in their own way, on what an integrated health care model might look like.

  12. Work turned in late will be subject to a 10% per day reduction in grade.
    • Example: A perfect paper turned in 2 days late would receive a grade of 80%
  13. Make-Up exams are at the discretion of the instructor which may or may not be granted.
