An interest in natural healing runs deep in my family. As a child, I remember my father helping and healing others with homeopathy. My father, in turn, was inspired by his grandparents who were known as the local community healers back in India. Watching Dad help others was an inspiration and made it easy for me to choose a career in noninvasive, safe and effective natural therapies. In fact, I grew up thinking homeopathic remedies were mainstream medicine until I went to high school and saw that instead of a homeopathic remedy, others used synthetic prescriptions and over-the-counter medicines.
I’ve been working at the Natural Care Center at Woodwinds since 2001. Prior to this, I had a private practice in St. Paul. One of the things I really enjoy is practicing in an integrative environment. Patients at the Natural Care Center may be seen by multiple providers from the different disciplines offered. The providers can guide one another and assess the patient in a collective way which is hard to accomplish without a multidisciplinary and integrative approach.
My approach with patients is to listen to their full story to try to understand who they are, not just their disease. I want to understand the journey that led them to their current state – physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually. I want to know the source of imbalance for them. Once that’s revealed, then my goal is to empower patients to take responsibility for their health by addressing the imbalance. I consider myself a health coach so I spend a lot of time educating the patient; I want the patient to be fully involved in making change happen. In order to do that, they need to take ownership of their lifestyle choices.
