NWHSU Alum Speaks at UMN Grand Rounds

Bouwens presented about acupuncture for spinal cord injuries at the UMN Grand Rounds. She is currently involved in research at the HealthPartners Neuroscience Center and works at Healing Response Acupuncture & Functional Neurology in Lake Elmo.

Bouwens introduced acupuncture to the audience, then moved into its applications for neurological rehabilitation and spinal cord injury rehabilitation. She outlined the evidence and shared a case study review. She closed her presentation with a patient testimonial in relation to the case study. At the end there was a vibrant discussion and question and answer session. The presentation is a great learning opportunity. It goes in depth on the effects of acupuncture on the nervous system. It’s also a great resource for current evidence on the use of acupuncture for spinal cord injury rehabilitation. 

About the UMN Grand Rounds Lecture Series

The UMN Grand Rounds lecture was presented through the Minnesota Regional SCI Model System. It’s a collaboration between Allina Health/Courage Kenny Rehabilitation Institute, the Mayo Clinic, Regions Hospital, and the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine at the University of Minnesota Medical School. They also participate in community engagement with Unite 2 Fight Paralysis, the Minnesota Spinal Cord Injury Association, the Get Up Stand Up to Cure Paralysis Foundation, the Minnesota Chapter of the Paralyzed Veterans of America, the North American Spinal Cord Injury Consortium and the United Spinal Association.
