Study at a Dual-Accredited School for Massage Therapy

Northwestern Health Sciences University, a private and nonprofit institution, is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission.

The Massage Therapy Certificate Program is accredited by the Commission on Massage Therapy Accreditation (COMTA). As an accredited program, our massage therapy school meets the high standards of COMTA for curriculum, faculty competence, relationship with employers, and financial stability, among other factors.

National Certification in Therapeutic Massage

The National Certification in Therapeutic Massage credential (NCTM) establishes you as a dedicated healthcare professional with the knowledge and skills to uphold high standards of excellence in the practice of massage therapy. A massage certification is an important step in establishing your professional credentials.

When you graduate from NWHSU’s certified massage therapist school, you are qualified to take the exam that leads to national massage therapist certification. The massage program prepares you well for this licensing exam.

State Required Licensure

As of 2015, statewide standards for massage therapy practice had been established in 44 states and the District of Columbia. Each state has established slightly differing standards for eligibility to become a licensed massage therapist. Professional licensure requirements vary by jurisdiction.

Students should not rely upon staff descriptions or statements regarding licensure requirements and need to consult directly with the licensure board for the profession and in the state or province in which they intend to practice.

Minnesota Requirements for Massage Professionals

At this time, no statewide standard for professional licensure, registration or certification exists for massage practitioners in Minnesota. Many cities in Minnesota have established ordinances that regulate the practice of massage therapy and some cities require practitioner registration.

Receipt of a certificate or degree from Northwestern Health Sciences University does not guarantee a license or certification to practice. States vary in the specific courses of study required and/or state-based testing for certification or licensing. Students are responsible for confirming with the appropriate board(s) to determine the specific requirements for the state(s) in which they intend to practice and/or seek employment.
