Provider Education on Nonpharmacologic Alternatives to Opioid Use and Substance Abuse Recognition

In response to the opioid addiction and overdose epidemic in Minnesota, Northwestern Health Sciences University has developed a series of online continuing education courses for healthcare professionals. The goal: decreasing the prescription of clinically inappropriate opioids while supporting pain management needs of Minnesotans.

This free, on-demand education on opioid prevention and abuse recognition is available now to Minnesota healthcare providers. The courses aim to train a broad range of professionals to identify, manage, and support patients at risk for opioid misuse. MN CE approval pending for acupuncture, chiropractic, and massage therapy.

Alternatives to Opioids for Pain Management

Educating providers about safe and effective non-pharmacological treatments (NPT) for pain.

This 1-hour course emphasizes evidence-based interventions for common pain conditions for which opioids are still commonly prescribed. Interventions include acupuncture, exercise, massage therapy, manipulative therapy, yoga, and mind-body therapies.

Identifying and Addressing Opioid and Substance Use Disorder in Practice

Providing instruction on contemporary best practices for Opioid and Substance Use Disorder (SUD) screening, intervening, and referral as needed.

This 2-hour course covers the Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) model, a well-recognized model advocated by the Minnesota Department of Health. SBIRT aids in early intervention and treatment of individuals with or at risk of SUD.
