Students Lead MOvember Movement on Campus

Kate Martin | October 26, 2012

Campaign aims to change the face of men’s health.

Moustaches, hair extensions and mo’ events will soon be sprouting up on people and around campus. The Northwestern MOvember team is encouraging the campus community to take part in this student-led campaign to raise awareness and money for men’s health, specifically prostate and testicular cancer initiatives. The idea is for guys to groom a lush moustache for the month of November, and sport the resulting mo’ proudly, through thick and thin, encouraging conversations to shed light on the under-discussed topic of men’s health. Gals can participate by wearing a blue hair extension in support of prostate cancer or orchid color for testicular cancer. Known as Mo Bros and Mo Sistas for the month, those who participate effectively become walking, talking billboards for men’s health awareness.

Last year, Northwestern students rallied to raise nearly $2,500. The goal for 2012 doubles-up and aims to have more than 250 participants and raise $5,000.  “As health care providers, it is our duty to educate patients on disease prevention and promote good health at all stages of your life,” said Matt Zylak, NWHSU MOvember team captain. “This is a playful way to educate the public, our peers and ourselves about an important and sensitive topic affecting men of all ages.”

The MOvember team has a series of events and activities planned throughout November.
