Team Northwestern participates in St. Paul's Dragon Boat Festival
August 07, 2013
A team made up of Northwestern students, staff and faculty finished strong in the Dragon Boat Festival races on July 13-14. Team Northwestern raced in three sets, with two runs per set for a total of six full runs. They won three of the six, and missed placing for the top three finalists by mere seconds.
The fiberglass boats were shaped into the form of a dragon. Rebecca Gervais was the flag catcher, literally propping herself up onto the dragon head shaped mast and leaning over to grab a flag out of the water. The rowers paddled to a cadence beat by drummer Victoria Huitt.
Northwestern also staffed a booth at the festival, and many people stopped by to ask questions about the University and programs. “The festival went well, and the whole weekend was a blast,” said Valerie Overby, a Northwestern student who organized Team Northwestern and the festival booth.
Dragon boat team members included: Dawn Pivec, Holly Battrum, James Carolan, Kristin Blake, Kierstin Olson, Rebecca Gervais, Overby, Elle Stoesz, Jim Hulbert, Christian Hanson, Sheryl Cota, Victoria Huitt, Aleesha Ackerman, Jodi Peltier, Kim Doyle, Parker Dahlgren, Taylor Morisette, Taylor Roby and Tanya Werner.
