Christian Organization on Northwestern’s Campus Will Send Gifts to Children Overseas

The ROCK, a Christian student group at Northwestern Health Sciences University, will send shoeboxes full of toys, clothing and other small gifts overseas to poverty-stricken children. This is the first year that The ROCK has participated in this program, called Operation Christmas Child. “We’ve been pleasantly surprised at the amount of involvement from students, faculty and even the surrounding community,” said Sarah Paveglio, a chiropractic student and president of The ROCK. »MORE

Naturals Host Pair of NCAA Division 3 Junior Varsity Hockey Teams

The Naturals, Northwestern Health Sciences University’s club hockey team, host St. Mary’s University and St. John’s University in a pair of games in the next three days. Wolfe-Harris Center for Clinical Studies Activity Keeps University at the Forefront in CAM Research

The Wolfe-Harris Center for Clinical Studies (WHCCS) at Northwestern Health Sciences University has earned an international reputation as a leader in clinical research for complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) treatments. The center’s efforts to secure federal funding for research studies offers just a glimpse into the activities of the WHCCS. “This is a very exciting time to be doing CAM research,” says Roni Evans, DC, MS, dean of research. “It has become generally accepted that using research to inform clinical decisions results in better patient care, and the CAM professions are not exempt. Northwestern Health Sciences University Will Conduct its 125th Chiropractic Commencement

The College of Chiropractic at Northwestern Health Sciences University will hold its 125th convocation on Nov. 20, 2009, at 6:30 p.m. The graduating class consists of 113 students, 32 of whom will graduate with academic honors. “The amount of graduates is definitely worth noting,” said Emily Tweed, PhD, associate vice president and dean of students, “It is one of the largest classes that we have had a graduation ceremony for on Northwestern’s campus.” »MORE

Brenda Ruples, assistant controller for Northwestern Health Sciences University, recently won $1,000 in the “Win $ Win” Sweepstakes from Horace Mann Insurance Companies. Did you know that a record of the rich history of Northwestern Health Sciences University is housed right on campus? Open the door to the Greenawalt Library’s archives and delve into the papers of John Wolfe, DC, Northwestern’s founder, or read the speeches that  J. Lamoine De Rusha, DC, a former professor, gave all over the world. Take a gander at the 1920’s quack diagnostic instrument used to cure everything from cancer to syphilis and carefully turn the pages of the oldest book in the archives, written by Charles Bell, who was the first to diagnose Bell’s Palsy, a temporary paralysis of the facial muscles. »MORE

Northwestern Posts Record Overall Team Finish at Chiro Games

Thanks to silver-medal finishes by the men’s hockey team and a coed volleyball team, Northwestern Health Sciences University recorded its best overall team finish ever at Chiro Games by finishing in a tie for fourth place with 16 points. The women’s basketball team from Northwestern also earned a bronze medal.

Nearly 600 chiropractic students descended on Cocoa Beach, Fla., for the annual Chiro Games on Nov. 7-8, 2009. The games began in 1992. Northwestern had the largest contingent of competitors with 100 students. The best previous finish by Northwestern was last year, when Northwestern finished seventh among the chiropractic colleges. »MORE

‘Tis the season of giving, and Northwestern Health Sciences University is once again collecting gifts for Cornerstone’s annual Santa Shop, to help young victims of domestic abuse experience the excitement and joy of giving. Monday night’s Showcase Silver Central League game didn’t look good for Northwestern Health Sciences University’s club hockey team, the Naturals. The late start of the game (10:45 p.m.) and school work combined to reduce the number of Northwestern players who showed up at Mariucci Arena on Nov. 2 to five. That’s one player short of the six required to play hockey – and that doesn’t even cover substitutions. »MORE

Kudos to Northwestern Graduates Who Repay Their Loans

Northwestern Health Sciences University once again falls far below the average national default rate of 6.5 percent and the regional default rate of 3.3 percent. Northwestern graduates had a low federal loan default rate of 0.3 percent once again this last trimester. Recent default rates have been as low as 0.2 percent or even 0.0 percent. “In layman’s terms that just means that graduates who have begun the repayment process on their federal loans are actually paying them,” said Andy Hoppin, director of financial aid. »MORE

The city of Bloomington, the Optimists’ club, and Northwestern Health Sciences University teamed up to host The Bloomington Citywide Halloween party on Oct. 31. It all started so well on Halloween night for Northwestern Health Sciences University’s collegiate club hockey team, the Naturals. Defenseman Mike Modich, T10 chiropractic, opened Northwestern’s game against the Gustavus Adolphus junior varsity team with a goal just 15 seconds into the first period on an assist from forward Jake Bohnen, T4 chiropractic.

But what started great soon became ghastly, as the Naturals were outskated and outhustled by Gustavus on the way to a 10-2 loss at Bloomington Ice Gardens on Oct. 31, dropping their season record to 3-2. »MORE

Halloween Didn’t Stop Naturals’ Fans from Supporting Their Team

Halloween could not keep Northwestern Health Sciences University’s students from cheering on the Naturals, the University’s American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) team, in their game against the Gustavus Adolphus junior varsity on Oct. 31. The Minnesota College of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine Takes the Final Step in the Re-Accreditation Process

The Minnesota College of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (MCAOM) at Northwestern Health Sciences University is preparing for the last step in the college’s two-year long re-accreditation process. On Nov. 4-6, 2009, the University will host a team of four from the Accreditation Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (ACAOM), who were specifically chosen to review MCAOM. During their visit, they will meet and interview various faculty and staff, review student records, observe classes, and meet with students that have volunteered. »MORE

Chiropractors Restored to Physician Status in Major Federal Employee Plan

Doctors of chiropractic have been re-designated “physicians” according to the Blue Cross Blue Shield Federal Employee Plan (FEP), which was identified by President Obama as a template for future health care reform. This is the result of a drastic effort by the American Chiropractic Association (ACA). A previous shift of chiropractors from “physicians” to “other health care providers” in the FEP took place in January 2009, causing the ACA to take action. »MORE

Northwestern expects to have a full squad on the ice for the first time this season to take on the Gusties, who are opening their season against Northwestern. Northwestern Students Will Go for the Gold at Annual Chiro Games

The Games will take place Nov. 7-8, 2009 in Cocoa Beach, Fla., and include 12 different sporting events such as co-ed beach volleyball, men’s golf, and women’s soccer. Nine chiropractic schools are scheduled to participate. More than 100 students from Northwestern are planning on competing in Chiro Games. In the fall of 2008, Northwestern Health Sciences University unveiled a new building –  the Wolfe-Harris Center for Excellence – and the adjoining Standard Process Healing Garden.
