Dr. Lawrenz-Smith elected to CAAHP Board of Directors

Dr. Lawrenz-SmithCongratulations to Susan Lawrenz-Smith, PhD, who was elected to the board of directors for the Central Association for Advisors of Health Professionals (CAAHP).

The CAAHP is a regional branch of a national organization composed of professionals from colleges and universities who are dedicated to the professional development of advisors for the health professions. They provide opportunities to share information and experiences, as well as establish relationships that benefit students.

Their current strategic goals are to increase capacity for membership from community colleges and underrepresented regions, capitalize on internal expertise, increase evidence based advising and improve communication to and amongst advisors.

“My goals as a CAAHP board member are to elevate advising through research and scholarships, as I was awarded a grant by the CAAHP that will help students prepare robust applications,” shared Dr. Lawrenz-Smith. “I want to inform institutions of the value of advising as a necessary investment in student outcomes, as well as to bring a shared definition and understanding to post-baccalaureate programs.”

As an at-large member, Dr. Lawrenz-Smith is responsible for representing the other CAAHP members and advancing the field of health professions advising. Her selection for this competitive, yearlong program will benefit the students at Northwestern Health Sciences University. “This is a testament to our dedication to student advising, and Dr. LS’s commitment to increase our visibility and contributions to this field, shared Jason Thoen, PhD, chair of natural sciences at NWHSU.
