Northwestern students plan MOvember events

Campaign aims to change the face of men's health.

Moustaches, MOvember t-shirts and mo’ events will soon be sprouting up on people and around campus. The Northwestern MOvember team is encouraging the campus community to take part in this student-led campaign to raise awareness and money for men’s health, specifically prostate and testicular cancer initiatives.

The idea is for guys to groom a lush moustache for the month of November, and encourage conversations to shed light on the under-discussed topic of men’s health. Gals and guys can participate by wearing MOvember t-shirts in support of prostate cancer and testicular cancer, participate in the Dodgeball tournament, or buy a pint glass sponsored by the Bloomington Cowboy Jack’s.Teaming up with Cowboy Jack’s for the second year in a row, 250 pint glasses were donated and can be purchased for $5 and used at the MOvember party at Cowboy Jack’s on November 14.

Known as Mo Bros and Mo Sistas for the month, those who participate effectively become walking, talking billboards for men’s health awareness.

"This is a unique experience for our students and faculty to get involved on an international level,” said Dana Asplund, co-NWHSU MOvember team captain. “We were honored to be one of the top five teams in Minnesota last year, and we hope to make a large impact again this year."

Last year, Northwestern students rallied together to raise nearly $7,500. The goal for 2013 aims to have more than 300 participants, and raise $10,000.

“As health care providers, it is our duty to educate patients on disease prevention and promote good health in all stages of life,” said Madeline Gail, co-NWHSU MOvember team captain.  "Unfortunately many of our friends and family members will be diagnosed with prostate and testicular cancer. With a cause near to my heart, by participating in MOvember, we are able to raise awareness, knowledge and prevention toward something that hopefully no man or family will have to face."

The MOvember team has a series of events and activities planned throughout November.
