Improve your running performance and help prevent injuries
The Sweere Center Biomechanics and Human Performance Assessment Laboratory is offering the Twin Cities’ first 3-D Gait Analysis which moves beyond the typical, but limited, 2-D analyses commonly available.
Benefits of 3-D Gait Analysis
As a runner, you'll benefit from knowing both the kinematics (joint angles) and kinetics (forces and moments) of your gait in three dimensions. While many running shops and coaches are well-trained and can serve as a excellent starting point for identifying basic gait issues, this 3-D quantitative examination can reveal subtle but clinically significant issues in a your running gait.
This knowledge can enable you to:
- Modify your form to improve running performance
- Reduce the chance of injury
- Help heal injuries
We welcome everyone at all levels of athletic ability. While fitness and performance levels may vary between our clients, yet the service we provide to all individuals is the same.
What happens during your visit
The gait analysis data is collected while you run on a Bertec instrumented treadmill. At the same time, we collect movement data using our 12-camera Vicon motion capture system. Combining the data from these two systems allows us to report all lower limb joint (and pelvis) angles in three dimensions along with the associated joint moments (torques).
Two videos are also captured during the session. An HD camera captures the whole person running, while a high-speed video camera captures a close-up of your feet.
What to bring
Bring your normal running apparel and shoes including orthotics/inserts. (We have changing rooms.) Minimize the reflective clothing and shoe material as we will attach reflective markers (using elastic straps) to allow capture of your movements.
Compression-type shorts or tights are preferred to make the attachment of the reflective marker clusters easier.
Your written report
At the end of the session, a written report is generated along with video and a computer-generated model of the gait parameters We will review the report with you.
An electronic copy is also sent to you and any desired third parties. This allows you to share the report with your coach, trainer or healthcare provider.
As there are many parameters, many of which are unfamiliar to runners and clinicians, a biomechanical analysis report is included pointing out and explaining any outstanding features captured in the data.
Length of appointment
Your visit usually last about 1-1.5 hours. This includes changing into your running apparel, the set-up, data collection and review of the data.
Warm-up and running time
We allow you to warm up as much as needed on the treadmill, but the actual running time for the data collection is only 5-10 minutes at a self-selected speed.
If you are experiencing acute pain
We will not be able to complete a thorough assessment of your movement in the presence of acute pain. Pain can change movement and movement can change pain.
A rapid increase in symptoms (acute), including pain, should be addressed by your healthcare provider who will determine the need for diagnostic tests and treatment.
