The Importance of Staying Hydrated

Next to oxygen, water is the most important nutrient your body needs to properly function. You can only survive for approximately three days without water. Water makes up approximately 60 percent of the body in males and 50 percent in females. Blood is comprised of 80 percent water, muscle is 75 percent water, bone is 25 percent water, and fat is 20 percent water. Notice that muscle tissue holds more water than fat; the leaner you are, the more fluids you should consume.

Lack of water is considered to be the number one trigger of daytime fatigue; so instead of reaching for an afternoon coffee or soda, grab some water.

The functions of water:

  • It plays a critical role in regulating body temperature.
  • Carries nutrients throughout the body
  • Improves digestion
  • Eliminates waste and toxins from the body
